AION 2 Field Guide

What a Feather actually is

An Empyrean Trace is a world object rather than an inventory drop you farm from mobs. You loot it in the open world, and the shard it gives you is converted at a regional Monolith into character progression. The Elyos version is named Empyrean Trace: Verteron and the Asmodian version is Empyrean Trace: Altgard, so the item you collect is faction specific even though the system is identical on both sides.

Where they spawn and why you miss them

  • They sit in the open world across faction territory, not inside dungeons.
  • Many are placed somewhere that requires flying, gliding or clearing a mob pack before you can reach them.
  • They do not appear on a standard quest tracker, so the map and a little exploration do the work.
  • Because the early zones are dense, leveling through Verteron or Altgard naturally walks you past a large number of them.

The Monolith turn-in

Turning traces in happens at the regional Monolith. Chinese-language guides reported the Verteron Monolith unlocking around level 17 during the early access period, with feather turn-ins feeding amulet enhancement scrolls and excess feathers converting into enhancement materials. Treat level 17 as a reported figure rather than a published requirement, and check the Monolith yourself once you reach that band, because the unlock is the gate that decides when feather collecting starts paying.

How to farm feathers efficiently

  1. Sweep a zone on foot before you have flight, and mark anything you cannot reach.
  2. Take the movement and gliding unlocks before you do a dedicated collection pass.
  3. Batch your turn-ins. Walking back to the Monolith for a single shard wastes more time than the shard is worth.
  4. Do the pass in the zone you are already questing in, because travel time is the real cost.
  5. Keep leftover feathers rather than discarding them; guides describe an exchange path for surplus.

Why feathers matter more than they look

AION 2 front-loads a lot of its power into permanent unlocks, and feathers are one of the few sources of that power that costs only time and movement rather than currency. A character who collected traces while leveling arrives at 50 with more skill investment than one who rushed the campaign, and that gap is expensive to close later because the low-level zones stop being worth visiting. The practical advice is unglamorous: while you are in a zone anyway, clear the traces in it.
