The quest categories, by the numbers
The client data is far larger than most people expect, and it is split into categories rather than being one list. The counts below come from datasets read out of the client rather than from a publisher announcement, so treat the totals as approximate and the category structure as the reliable part.
| Category | Count | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Episode | 179 | The main storyline, and the primary experience source in the early game |
| Exploration | 204 | Side objectives tied to discovering regions and points of interest |
| Duty | 206 | Repeatable content tasks |
| Regional | 122 | Local opportunities tied to a specific area |
| Crafting | 12 | Gathering and production tasks |
| Ascension | 10 | Milestone quests that unlock advanced systems |
| Faction energy | 2 | A small faction-specific pair in the same dataset |
Episode quests are the mainline and the experience engine
Episode quests provide the main storyline and, in the early game, the primary source of experience. That combination is why they are the default direction when you do not know what to do next: they move you to the next required region, introduce systems, and act as the prerequisite for later progress. If you are behind on levels, the answer is almost always more Episode progress rather than more grinding.
Ascension quests are system unlocks, not filler
There are only ten Ascension quests, and they are described as critical early-game milestones that unlock more advanced systems. That makes them the highest-value non-mainline quests in the game and the worst ones to skip, because a locked system is a permanent cost until you remember to go back. If an Ascension quest is available, take it before the optional content around it.

AION 2 Ascension Gauge Explained | How to Reach 100% (Daeva in a Dream Quest)
MistaWigglez · uploaded 2026-10-01 · 2:28
- Filling the Ascension gauge requires side quests, regional quests, Ascension tasks, sealed dungeons or captured strongholds.
- The first Ascension tier has no Ascension quests available yet, so region work has to carry it.
- Regional and Ascension quests live in the journal and appear on the map with a question mark.
MistaWigglez · English captionsThe Ascension gauge turns questing into a bar to fill
Ascension is presented as a gauge you fill to 100 percent rather than as a quest you accept. The activities that move it are side quests, regional quests, the Ascension tasks themselves, sealed dungeons and captured strongholds, so it draws on both questing and dungeon content at once. The practical consequence is that you never need to stop progress on one channel to fill it: keep clearing the content you were already doing and the bar moves.
- The first Ascension tier has no Ascension tasks available yet, so region work and sealed dungeons carry the early progress.
- Regional and Ascension quests are listed in the journal rather than in the world, and they appear on the map with a question mark.
- Because side quests are named as a contributing activity, the mainline is not the only thing worth completing if the bar is behind.
Episode or nearby Region quest: how to decide
Neither category is always more important, and the useful rule is about the situation rather than the label. An Episode step wins when it advances the story to the next required region, unlocks a system, explains a mechanic that group content will assume you know, or is a prerequisite for something else. A Region quest wins when it is already on your Episode route, when its reward solves a problem you actually have, when it feeds a progression system you are developing, or when it gives you practice before a harder area.
- Defer a Region quest when the reward is useless to you and the detour is long.
- Defer it when the combat is clearly beyond your current gear, because a death loop costs more time than the quest saves.
- Defer it when the time is better spent on a dungeon or on the Episode step that is actually blocking you.
- Do it when it is on the way, and note that Region content sometimes exposes progression systems that no Episode marker shows you.
The reward check that stops wasted detours
Quest rewards are worth evaluating against your current needs rather than collecting because they exist. The categories that matter are inventory and storage expansion, equipment, currency, consumables, titles and direct progression contributions. The same reward can be valuable at one point and worthless at another: if a later source already covers it, or if it is below your current tier, the detour is pure cost. Titles and storage expansion are the two that stay useful longest, which is why they can justify a detour that raw currency does not.
A repeatable routine for a quest session
- Confirm your current Episode objective and its destination before you move.
- Scan the Region objectives in the same area while you are there.
- Compare each visible reward against your gear, storage, currency and unlock needs.
- Pick one primary objective and at most one useful side objective.
- After finishing, check whether the next objective has a prerequisite or a newly unlocked system.
- If the marker, the objective text and the map disagree with each other, stop and investigate rather than travelling on a guess.
When a quest will not advance
- Re-read the quest log and the map marker, then check whether the NPC or location belongs to your current region.
- Check for a prerequisite quest or a neighbouring Episode step you have not completed.
- Confirm it is not gated by time, region or an uncompleted system unlock.
- Read the objective text literally. Most stalled quests are a wrong target, a wrong interaction or being in the wrong area rather than a bug.
- Check the regional service announcement for maintenance or a known issue before assuming the quest itself is broken.
- Remember that a client update can change prerequisites and rewards, so an old third-party list is a poor authority.
If you do contact support, include the quest name, the objective text verbatim, your region, your platform and a timestamp, plus a screenshot or short clip with account identifiers removed. Never include a password, a one-time code or payment information in a support message or on a forum post.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How do you complete 'The One Who Hears the Voice' quest in AION 2?
'The One Who Hears the Voice' is the pivotal Ascension milestone quest that unlocks your Daeva wings and flight mechanics. Head to the marked sanctuary ruins, defeat the manifested void shadows, and commune with the ancient Aether Monolith to advance your Ascension Gauge to 100%.
How many quests are in AION 2?
Client datasets list 1,043 quests for the global client and 1,312 for a companion dataset, with 179 Episode quests, 204 Exploration, 206 Duty, 122 Regional, 12 Crafting and 10 Ascension. Treat the totals as approximate.
What are Ascension quests in AION 2?
Ten milestone quests that unlock advanced systems. They are the highest-value optional quests in the game and the worst ones to skip, because a locked system costs you until you go back for it.
Should I do side quests while leveling?
Only when they are on your Episode route, the reward solves a current problem, or the area gives useful practice. Otherwise the mainline is the faster path to both levels and unlocks.
What should I do if a quest will not complete?
Re-read the objective text, check for prerequisites and system unlocks, verify you are in the correct region, then check the regional announcement for known issues before assuming it is a bug.
